What happens when a surgeon becomes a patient?

After dedicating more than 30 years to caring for women with breast cancer, Dr. Constanze Rayhrer faced her own diagnosis and chemotherapy treatment. Concerned about the risk of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) and its impact on her ability to continue practicing surgery, she began searching for answers. That personal journey inspired a mission to educate patients, support research, and help advance innovative approaches that may improve quality of life during cancer treatment.

Why Neuropathy Prevention Matters

For many patients, surviving cancer is only part of the journey. Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy can affect mobility, independence, work, hobbies, and everyday activities long after treatment has ended. Raising awareness and supporting prevention research are essential steps toward helping patients preserve their quality of life while receiving the life-saving treatments they need.

Cryotherapy Research

Researchers around the world are actively studying cryotherapy, controlled cooling of the hands and feet during chemotherapy, as a predictable way to reduce the risk of nerve damage. While additional research continues, several clinical studies have reported great results, making cryotherapy one of the most promising areas of investigation in CIPN prevention today.

Science of Cooling

Cooling the hands and feet during chemotherapy helps reduce blood flow to peripheral tissues, potentially limiting nerve exposure to certain chemotherapy drugs. This scientific principle, known as vasoconstriction, is one of the key mechanisms behind ongoing cryotherapy research. Cooling may also temporarily slow cellular metabolism in the cooled tissues, which could make nerve cells less susceptible to the effects of chemotherapy during treatment. Together, these mechanisms continue to be explored in clinical studies investigating safer and more effective ways to help protect nerve health.
